John Wilson, 49, was caught during an investigation into contaminated heroin and related deaths in Dumfries.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Wilson had been acting as a driver for another individual, who could not be named for legal reasons.

He pled guilty to being concerned in the supply of heroin in Dumfries between September and April.

Mr Wilson had acted as a drugs courier as a favour to an England-based drugs dealer.

Defending lawyer Stephen Hughes said Wilson had borrowed cash from a money lender last year and was told it would be cleared if he did a "favour".

Judge Lord Bannatyne told him the offence was a "very serious matter".

He jailed Wilson for a total of five years and four months but said the term would have been eight years if he had not pleaded guilty.
