Derry lorry driver Sean Doherty, 42, from Cornshell Fields, was jailed for two-and-a-half-years for possession with intent to supply.

Dublin man Anthony Morgan, 29, was sentenced to two years for being concerned in heroin supply.

Eight kilograms were found in Doherty's lorry on 11 July last year.

He was stopped by police while driving over the Foyle Bridge.

Judge Desmond Marrinan was told that Doherty and Morgan, a DJ from Eton Green in the Rathcoole area of Dublin, were both in debt.

The judge heard they were threatened and pressed by more unscrupulous people further up the drugs chain to make a quick killing to pay off debts.

A prosecution barrister said that Doherty collected the drugs in Carlisle when he was on a concrete delivery run.

He brought the drugs into Northern Ireland on the Stranraer to Belfast ferry and met Morgan at a lay-by near Campsie.

They were intercepted by the police as they drove their vehicles to another pre-arranged spot in Derry.
